Programming (1986), a very early interest in 3d Animation/VFX (1991), a family sourced knowledge in film production, growing up in the early 1990s clubscene of Berlin and a diploma in communication design (2006) – building upon this background fALk Gärtner lets motion pictures dance in clubs and music driven events starting in 1999. Soon after he is on stage with big acts like Paul van Dyk, Westbam, Rythm&Sound und Marky and plays in almost every good club Berlin and his hometown Potsdam have to offer. He then also gets booked to Vienna, Istanbul, London and Paris.
Starting in 2002 he takes part in the networking of the international VJ scene and helps set up the first VJ conferences in the UK and Germany. During the same time he is asked to join the project “Blinkenlights” where he illumnates prominent buildings in Paris and Toronto with his work.
Bored by the rythm and feel collages that dominate the screens of the clubs he researches possibilities to use this medium to transmit stories and content culminating 2006 in his Live Cinema Theory and the science fiction live film “Kalkin:Revelation” that builds upon his theoretical work.
Since finishing his film “Gambling, Gods and LSD” in 2002, filmmaker Peter Mettler has been exploring the still-to-be-discovered possible realms of ‘live cinema’.
This has brought about both composed and improvised experiments in locations as diverse as forests, churches, raves and concert halls, involving a wide range of artists in music, dance and installation, including performers like Fred Frith, Monolake, Andrea Nann and The Art of Time ensemble.
In an ongoing effort to involve spontaneous and improvisational tactics within the experience of cinema, he has been collaborating in the design and development of MIXXA performance software with Derivative Inc. Parallel to this, the recently completed film “Petropolis” and his feature film work-in-progress, all demonstrate an ambition towards invoking a heightened perception through the use of image and sound.
